Past

Twelve and a Half Years Ago

“I FIGURED IT OUT!” LEIGH yells loudly as she runs to me in the hall of the school. We have five minutes to get to our next class and mine is all the way on the other side of the building, but still, I stand firm, waiting to hear what she needs to tell me.

“What, babe?” I smile down at her. “What did you figure out?”

“What I’m going to do for the rest of my life.” She’s got her arms wrapped around my trim waist and I can’t help but smile down at her, her excitement contagious.

“Well, don’t keep me waiting. What is it you decided during second period?”

It’s our senior year of school and we only have a few months left until graduation. Up until today, Leigh had zero clue as to what she was going to do. Her parents had already told her she could enroll in the local junior college after graduation and get some core classes over while she decided what she wanted to do.

But my girl hated the idea of four more years of boring schoolwork only to come out of it with a degree that would ultimately slowly kill her. She was creative and a free spirit and she just needed a job that reflected that.

“I am going to be the best hairdresser on the East Coast. People will flock from all over the state to get a cut and color from me.”

I love her confidence and enthusiasm.

“Red Oak’s a small town.”

“That’s why I have to be awesome at it. I love Red Oak. I want to live here, get married here, raise a family here. If I’m good enough they will come to me.”

“You’re always good enough. You got this.”

“Damn right, I do. All I have to do now is figure out cosmetology school and show everyone what I got.”

Just then the bell rings and she darts into the classroom next to where we’re standing. I turn and slowly make my way to the other side of campus. What’s one more tardy when adding it onto a pile of a million more.
